AOF’s William G. Anderson, DO, Minority Scholarship recognizes today’s minority medical students who are on their way to becoming tomorrow’s doctors committed to a life-long pursuit to eliminate health care disparities and to enhance patient-centered care.

These annual scholarships are named after Dr. Anderson, the first African American to serve as a member of the American Osteopathic Association, and was Board Chair from 1994 to 1995.

Eligibility

• Minority Osteopathic medical student (as defined as African Americans; Asian Americans, Arab and other Middle Eastern Americans, Native Americans (including American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians); Latinos including Puerto Ricans or other Hispanic ethnic origins. International students are also welcome to apply.
• In good academic standing at a COCA-Accredited College/School of Osteopathic Medicine (COM/SOM)
• Current OMS II, III, or IV
• Strong interest in Osteopathic medicine, its philosophy, and principles
• Consistently strong academic achievement
• Demonstrated leadership role in addressing the educational, societal, and health needs of minorities OR in addressing inequities in medical education and health care
• Noteworthy accomplishments, awards and honors, special projects, and extracurricular activities that demonstrate the applicant's ability to be a leader
• Significant financial need affecting completion of education

Proceeds from the sale of "Autobiographies of a Black Couple of the Greatest Generation" by William G. and Norma L. Anderson also benefit the scholarship program. This scholarship was established in 1998 to honor the distinguished career of William G. Anderson, DO, to recognize his life-long commitment to civil rights, and to highlight his philanthropic contributions throughout the osteopathic profession. The William G. Anderson, DO, Minority Scholarship Fund has grown since its inception through gifts such as the $1 million grant from the Heatherington Foundation for Education and Innovation in Health Care and others.
